AIMS

AIMS is a unique model in France that empowers students to become not only thoughtful consumers of the visual culture, but also creators and manipulators of it.

AIMS (Artiste Intervenant en Milieu Scolaire or Artist Educator Residency) was founded in 2009 by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations in partnership with the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the French Ministry of Education and the city of Saint-Ouen in the suburbs of Paris. The program harnesses the power that arts can exercise in social inclusion and educational innovation in public schools. It also provides a unique opportunity for young artists to train as educators while at the same time furthering their artistic journey. AIMS has served over 500 pupils, their families, teachers and a city representative of France’s cultural diversity and social mix.

An unprecedented curriculum combining artistic creation and social impact

AIMS is an artist residency program that stimulates the sharing of knowledge and creation between artists and pupils. The artists and students co-create an artistic project over the academic year.

Through a competitive process, the program selects recent graduates from Ecole des Beaux Arts who collaborate with classroom teachers to promote the arts as both a source of learning and exchange. Artists and the wider school community share, analyze, discuss and develop works in painting, photography, sculpture or artistic installations. The program concludes with a public exhibition in the heart of Paris and the conferral of a higher education degree upon presentation of a thesis on practical experience and theoretical findings.

AIMS is:

  • A training that blends artistic action and social impact;
  • An unprecedented collaboration among a foundation, a school, a ministry and a city;
  • An innovative project leading to professional opportunities for artists;
  • A testament to the impact of pooling talent and resources.
