La Criée – Théâtre national de Marseille - Une année à la Criée

On the water at the Vieux Port, the Théâtre de la Criée is at the very heart of Marseille’s rich and diverse cultural fabric, and its location at the crossroads of so many communities is deliberately reflected in its programming and public outreach.

Performing arts as a tool for social integration

La Criée joins the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations in the belief that access to art and culture is a right for all and that artistic creation is a powerful tool for building or rebuilding confidence and self-esteem, solidifying communities and achieving professional and social integration.

La Criée is actively building relationships with community members, paying particular attention to impact and sustainability for those most in need.

A year at la Criée is a complete program co-developed with la Criée, social workers and the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations, targeting unemployed or underserved people of all ages from multi cultural backgrounds.
It main goal is to help the participants find a professional project or a new personal orientation through artistic practices and the acquisition of new tools for self-development. The participants work on improvisation, writing, music and movement with Lamine Diagne, Mina Gobrial, Nawelle Kallel - 3 professional artists.

The second edition started in September 2014. The group is composed of about 25 persons who meet every other Friday afternoon at la Criée. In addition to the artistic workshop, they discover the theatre from both on and off stage, attending three plays and meeting the people hard at work behind the scenes to learn about their trades. Finally, participants benefit from personalized counseling from partnering social centers.

In June 2015, participants will perform for friends and family while the public will receive a printed catalogue with texts written by all of the participants. The workshops and performance allow reflection on the future, new possibilities and catalyze new momentum in their lives.

Artistic creation and social impact

By partnering with a well-known cultural institution and social centers, the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations are reaffirming their conviction that art and creation are powerful channels for social empowerment.

By mixing backgrounds and generations and, challenging the participants to exchange and build something new together, the Foundations are promoting engaged citizens and a more collaborative society.
