The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations

The Fundació Joves Navegants de Balears

The Fundació Joves Navegants upholds the spirit of solidarity among sailors, developed in particular through the practice of sailing. With this ambition as its guide, the Foundation organizes educational programs for underprivileged youngsters.

The Fundació Joves Navegants: the sailing spirit contributes to education

Inspired by the approach developed by British sailing clubs for troubled youth, a group of enthusiastic sailors in Palma (Balearic Islands) decided to create the Fundació Joves Navegants. Aware of the economic hardship and family difficulties experienced by some of the island’s young people, they wanted to reach out and share their passion for sailing.

Sailing is a way to bring together a group of young people and their instructors in a confined space. It offers an opportunity to teach the basics of community living as well as the importance of respect, trust and helping one another. Participants from ages 14 to 22 are able to discover the joys of sailing while learning about themselves, the group and their surroundings.

The Fundació Joves Navegants organizes various types of outings in the Mediterranean on its sailboat, Galaxie. They include days devoted to discovery and awareness of the importance of sustainability; participation in regattas; and support for training that will enable some of the young participants to contemplate sailing as a source of future employment.

A partnership born of a longstanding tradition: Edmond de Rothschild and the sea

The Rothschild family has a longstanding passion for nautical activities, exemplified today in the Gitana boats based in Brittany, France, at Lorient. The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations were naturally interested in the work of the Joves Navegants Foundation and their collective commitment to young people experiencing difficulties.

Thanks to this partnership, the Joves Navegants Foundation receives support for the organization of outings during the summer months. In addition, Galaxie will receive the necessary technical improvements so the sailboat can take part in the Mediterranean Ruta de la Sal regatta in February 2011.

They were six to arrive at Lorient airport wearing shorts on Tuesday 5 June in real Breton sailing weather. Accompanied by their official skipper, Raimon Martinez, and Paco Segura, Vice President of the Joves Navegants Foundation to which they belong in Palma de Majorque, they were there to meet the Gitana Team.
