Orchestre de Paris: Vienna tour for children from care center

9/6/2011 - The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations and the Orchestre de Paris have created a new partnership aimed at combining art appreciation and social responsibility by making music more accessible.

Orchestre de Paris: Vienna tour for children from care center

Thanks to this initiative, eight children from difficult socio-economic backgrounds living at the Verrières-le-Buisson care residence outside Paris were able to accompany the Paris Symphony Orchestra on tour in Vienna in May 2011.

The children participated in the tour as part of a broader program aimed at raising awareness about classical music that includes violin lessons from professional musicians, guidance from experienced teachers and invitations to family concerts at venues such as the Salle Pleyel in Paris.

The tour was an amazing experience for the children, most of whom set off with their violin on their back to discover the unfamiliar world of concert touring having never flown before. The four-day trip allowed the children to experience the day-to-day life of musicians and to attend rehearsals and concerts that included the works of Brahms, Dvorak, Saint-Saëns, Berlioz and Sibelius.

They also visited Vienna’s Musikverein museum where the Orchestre de Paris played in a concert hall with acoustics known to be among the best in the world. Each child was paired with a musician to facilitate group interaction and encourage musical awareness. Other special moments during the trip included a local pastry tasting session, a visit to the legendary Spanish Riding School of Vienna to see the famous Lipizzaner stallions, and a tour of Schönbrunn Palace, once the home of Empress Sissi. Pictures were taken with the musicians and the children were treated to autographs from the Maestro Paavo Järvi.

They boarded the flight home tired but happy, thrilled and proud to tell those back home about everything they did.

Based on the success of this first initiative, the Foundations will further develop their partnership in France with the Orchestre de Paris and the Verrières-le-Buisson center for 2011/2012.
