One couple’s passion has given rise to a magical and timeless setting on the magnificent island of Majorca, one of the Balearic Islands. Yannick and Ben Jakober created the Fundación Jakober to be a museum – designed by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy – as well as a library and a center of learning for young people and their families.

A unique artistic concept: Fundación Jakober

Facing the Mediterranean Sea, the Fundación Jakober offers an exceptional playground of discovery for children and their families in an encounter with art.

The museum encompasses three areas:

• A garden inhabited by strange stone sculptures of animals representing renowned masterpieces that have been enlarged, taking visitors on a journey into a world as astonishing as that of Alice in Wonderland;

• An extraordinary collection of portraits of children painted between the 16th and 19th centuries, which offers surprising historical details such as the dresses worn by young boys until adolescence;

• A modern showcase for treasures of contemporary art, bringing visitors face to face with the major issues raised by current artistic creation.

These three distinct universes are arranged around an imposing house in Moorish style, which is home to the Jakober family’s collection as well as a fabulous art library where the island’s students and interested visitors are welcome to study.

A magical site for young visitors to learn about art

Ensuring that this exceptional site will continue to thrive and allow children to discover the arts is very important to the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations. Thanks to the Foundations’ support, children from Majorca visit the museum free of charge. In addition, the Foundatión’s contribution enabled the renovation of an area devoted to art education workshops.

The Fundación Jakober team has devised a rich educational program specifically designed for young children so they will be able to make the most of their visit and discoveries at the museum. Surprise, wonderment and questioning one’s own ideas are an essential part of education in the truest sense.

Our Foundations are committed to facilitating access to culture and broad artistic training for children from a very young age, and we are pleased to be partners in this poetic endeavor.
