The Odéon - Théâtre de l’Europe

The Odéon - Théâtre de l’Europe is one of the most renowned artistic stages in France. Its mission is to promote cultural heritage and artistic creation in France and Europe.

As an Odéon patron, the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations support the theater’s innovative programs designed for young people and budding theater companies.

The Odéon: workshop for European art

Built in 1782, the Odéon was given “French national theater” status in 1971. The theater combines prestige with a community presence, as is illustrated by the historic grand theater in the 6th arrondissement of Paris as well as the more recent Ateliers Berthier, located near the city’s suburbs. The Odéon maintains a repertoire of both classic and experimental plays. A new generation of French and European artists is developing and advocating theater that is both exceptional in quality and accessible to the general public.

A partnership that reaches out to young people, fostering a passion for drama from a young age

The Foundations contribute to several projects aimed at acquainting young people with the dramatic arts:

• acting and playwriting workshops;

• dramatic readings;

• visits to the Ateliers Berthier and the Odéon in Paris.

Participants are always invited to see the performance in connection with the workshop they attended, and meet the actors. They discover the theater, its codes, its power as an outlet that brings people together, and the pleasure of sharing emotions with attentive adults.

Increasing the impact of the dramatic arts

The Foundations contribute to the creation of artistic workshops for people from a wide range of backgrounds. For example, they support The Odéon in organizing dramatic readings for women who are learning to read, or who are part of social reintegration programs in the Parisian suburbs.

The Foundations also support a “Beyond the Walls” theater project. Actors travel to perform in community centers, municipal halls, cultural centers, schools and businesses. The actors thus leave behind their theater to reach out to spectators in their own day-to-day surroundings.

The theater then invites these new spectators to attend a performance on its own stages.

The Edmond de Rothschild Fondations were honored to support the Odéon – Théâtre de l’Europe until 2012.
