The Institut des Sciences du Vivant

The Foundations support the Institut des Sciences du Vivant in its efforts to bring together science and society. As a forum for information and exchange, the Life Sciences Institute (Institut des Sciences du Vivant) aims to increase the public’s awareness of science, its developments and its impact on society. The Institute organizes symposia and conferences as a way to reach the public.

The Life Sciences Institute: bringing together science and society

Founded in 1985 at the initiative of Doctor Charles Mérieux and Baron Edmond de Rothschild, the Life Sciences Institute in Lyon, France, conducts biomedical research.

At a time when the growing complexity of science tends to intimidate non-specialists, the Life Sciences Institute aims to make science accessible and useful to all.

The Institute’s work focuses on the potential impact of scientific discoveries in our daily lives in fields such as health, nutrition and the environment, exploring topics ranging from mobile telephones to genetically modified organisms.
The Institute organizes encounters that bring together decision-makers from different spheres of research, finance and business.

The Foundations promote discussion about scientific discoveries

The Foundations have built a solid and active partnership with the Life Sciences Institute. Together they organize symposia on topics such as “From Animals to Humans,” the human brain, and “How to provide food for 9 billion people.”

These events are widely recognized for the expertise of participating speakers and the quality of their audiences.

The Foundations’ support not only contributes to promoting excellence at the Institute, but also to expanding discussion topics linked to new discoveries in the life sciences. This is especially the case for neuroscience, an area of medicine
in which the Foundations have a particular and longstanding interest.

The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations were honored to support the Institut des Sciences du Vivant until 2010.
