The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations

France boasts a dense and rich fiber of businesses making significant social impact. Scale Up is the first program in France dedicated entirely to these businesses and their successful growth. Created in 2010 by Antropia, ESSEC Business School’s social incubator, and the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations, it leverages targeted training and access to experts and professionals as businesses develop and finance their growth.

All businesses pass through various stages of development, from a simple idea to start-up to growth and expansion. Each stage presents unique challenges and Scale Up was created explicitly to overcome the difficulties business face as they grow. Through a thoughtful combination of training, professional accompaniment and access to key networks, Scale Up equips growing businesses with the knowledge and skills to reinforce their economic performance, and in consequence, their social impact.

From September through March, Scale Up Laureates benefit from:

  • 3 seminars built around peer-to-peer learning, with the contribution of ESSEC professors and outside professionals
  • strategic and financial accompaniment by an Edmond de Rothschild Group banker
  • a full-time, Master-level intern to contribute to the definition and execution of the development strategy and drafting of the business plan
  • legal pro bono for issues related to business development and investor relations

The program ends with a “pitch event” in which Laureates are able to present their business plan to an audience of traditional and impact investors. It is held in conjunction with ESSEC’s Impact Day, an annual event that gathers a broad range of actors active in entrepreneurship in France, Europe and abroad.

Scale Up is open to businesses in French-speaking Europe with proof of concept, both economically and in terms of social impact. Since inception, the program has transformed over 20 social businesses and contributed to wider evolutions in France’s economic and social landscape.

In 2015, capitalizing on five years of experience and with the goal of sharing lessons learned as broadly as possible, Scale Up published Changer d’échelle : Manuel pour maximiser l’impact des entreprises sociales, a practical guide for social businesses as they grow. The manual (French language only) is available for free download here.
