The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations

France boasts a dense and rich fiber of social entrepreneurs. As in other countries, their successes are all too often removed from the mainstream economy and little known to the general public. The sector remains fragile and dependent upon quickly disappearing public subsidies and venture philanthropy.

To bridge this divide and to improve the robustness and professionalism of social entrepreneurship, the Edmond de Rothschild Foundations and Paris ESSEC  Business School created the ambitious Scale Up program in 2010. Scale Up is a first in France as it equips scalable social businesses with knowledge and skills to reinforce their economic model and financial sustainability, thereby increasing their social impact.

Scale Up was conceived to specifically target and respond to challenges that social entrepreneurs face in growing their business. It leverages classic business training and personalized accompaniment in two complimentary phases.

Phase 1 (January – June):

  • Two 2-day seminars on ESSEC’s campus with their world-class faculty
  • Personalized coaching from an ESSEC consultant
  • A Young Talent intern to assist with execution

Phase 2 (September – December):

  • Professional pro bono accompaniment

Financial: Edmond de Rothschild Group
Legal: Latham and Watkins, LLP
Communications: Publicis Group

Leading to a professional fundraising pitch to financial investors.

Since inception, Scale Up continues to grow and improve its offer. To date, the program has transformed over 20 social businesses and begun to change the French social entrepreneurship landscape.

In 2014, Scale Up will itself scale up! Eager to build on past success and increase its reach, the program will be open to 10 additional laureates from Belgium, France and Switzerland.

By harnessing the experience and capabilities of the mainstream private sector, Scale Up is helping to build a more responsible economy and a sustainable social sector.

Applications are currently being accepted for the Class of 2014.
