The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations

The International Polar Foundation

The mission of the International Polar Foundation is to provide information and increase awareness among the general public and political leaders about its research findings in the polar regions to lead to a greater understanding of the key mechanisms underlying climate change. The Edmond de Rothschild Foundations participated in the establishment of this Foundation and support its education and communications initiatives – in particular those designed with young people in mind.

The International Polar Foundation: improving our understanding of climate change

Founded in 2002, the International Polar Foundation is a Brussels-based scientific organization. By conducting studies and scientific research at the poles, its primary objective is to inform the general public and raise awareness of climate change and its consequences.

To this end, the Foundation publishes educational reports and develops CD-ROMs for teachers and their students. The International Polar Foundation also organizes conferences and seminars for the public.

Within the context of the International Polar Year – an ambitious scientific program devoted to the Arctic and the Antarctic from 2007 to 2009 – the International Polar Foundation oversaw the construction of the first “zero emissions” Antarctic research polar station, the Princess Elisabeth Station.

Education, science and the environment: priorities for the Foundations

Education, information, demonstration: these are the missions to which the Foundations have contributed alongside the International Polar Foundation, which is working to develop tools to stimulate the public’s interest in science and climate change.

The Foundations lent their support in particular to EducaPoles, the International Polar Foundation’s educational website. By offering adapted teaching tools and projects, the website aims to build awareness among young people and educators about the importance of the polar regions and climate change.
